Rebecca Correia Sings of Perseverance in Release of “Rose Colored Glasses” Feat. Lillie Mae

By Lauren Schwab Eyre

In the latest single, “Rose Colored Glasses,” from singer and songwriter Rebecca Correia featuring Lillie Mae, she sings of personal growth and resilience. Inspired by the women in her life who have persevered through challenging situations, the song reflects on a journey of leaving past troubles behind and finding solace and love. Rebecca talked with me about her musical inspirations, songwriting process, and her growth as an artist which will be reflected in her upcoming EP, Flying, set to release this Fall.

A Love For Massachusetts & Tennessee

Rebecca grew up in a small town in Massachusetts, loving farmland and a simple way of life. She was inspired by many genres including pop, grunge, alternative, and 90’s country music. While she had primarily performed in the Northeast, she decided to take the chance to do something different and move to Nashville in 2007. She gravitated towards the Leipers Fork area because there was so much beautiful farmland. She now spends half her year in each state performing and songwriting. Her music is inspired by all the sounds she grew up on and she doesn’t limit her sound to one genre. She appreciates all styles of music as they allow people from different backgrounds and cultures to come together.

Writing “Rose Colored Glasses”

For Rebecca, the songwriting process can be different each time. With “Rose Colored Glasses” she was reflecting on the experiences of women in her life with the hardships and challenges they had endured and persevered through. “They showed strength and perseverance in challenging situations. The concept of ‘Rose Colored Glasses’ is that sometimes it can be really good to keep those glasses on and look at the positive, but it’s also important to pull them back from time to time and look at the truth and reality of situations so you can mend fences or recognize the broken parts of situations so you can have an awareness to improve on certain situations that may be unhealthy or toxic in your life,” says Rebecca.

Rebecca collaborated with Lillie Mae on this song, she was one of the first people Rebecca met in Nashville when she moved there. Rebecca says Lillie is great at adapting and putting her touch on the music. “Her musicality is extraordinary; we share a lot of similar hardships and challenges and I knew she would help spread this message to her audience as well,” says Rebecca. With lines like she wears rose-colored glasses, even though it’s out of fashion” and “she’s on her way back home, she’s leaving all the bad things behind her as she goes, the song conveys the complexity of overcoming adversity and finding redemption.

“Somewhere in the distance,
there’s a place for her,
it’s coming into focus,

the past is just a blur,
on her way back home.”

Upcoming EP, Flying

Rebecca is also working on a forthcoming EP titled Flying, which will be available this Fall. While “Rose Colored Glasses” is a separate release, it offers a glimpse into the kind of music fans can expect from the upcoming release. The first single will be out on October 4. It’s very personal to Rebecca. It’s about growth, going from who you used to be to a new and powerful being, like a caterpillar morphs into a butterfly. It’s about becoming her most authentic self, relationships that didn’t work out, and getting back on the path she should be on. The EP includes a duet, “Speak To A Girl” with Shy Carter. It’s the only cover song as it means so much to Rebecca.

Growth is the word that comes to her mind with this collection of songs as she was able to build upon her past recording experiences. Casey Wasner is the producer of this record, he was able to identify what would be best and the different musical influences that came through and captured Rebecca’s musicality. “He was able to bring out the best parts of me to show my growth as a musician and a human being. From growing up in the music industry, being raw and young, and learning as I went. Now I have more to bring to the table from experiences and life lessons,” shares Rebecca.
