Until now, I didn’t listen to many songs about being a mom, now everything has shifted since becoming one. I love how Britnee Kellogg brings the reality and relatability of being a mama to life in her music. Her latest releases, “Fake,” “Die From A Broken Heart (Mama’s POV),” and past singles “Hey Mama,” and “This Mess” all melt my heart, so much I had to share and hope they do the same for you.
“Fake”
In a world where we can constantly feel the need to improve our outward beauty, Britnee sings about her mama telling her it’s most important to be genuine, upstanding and honest. This song tells the loving message from a mama to a daughter, that it’s fun to feel confident putting on make up, extensions and eyelashes, but let that be the only things about you that’s fake. I always want to set an example to my child to be confident, real and true to who you are.
“Been twenty years but I can still hear her
Mama puttin’ on Maybelline in the mirror
Sayin’, “Girl I see you watchin’ me
All these potions, all these creams
But when you take it off at night
You gotta like what you seeBe genuine as leather
Upstanding as an old oak tree
Be honest as that homemade wine makes you wanna be
Don’t do it for the status
Or say you love something you hate
Let your extensions and eyelashes
Be the only thing about you that’s fake,” – Britnee Kellogg
“Die From A Broken Heart (Mama’s POV)”
I love how Britnee sings in a heartfelt voice from the mama’s point of view in “Die From A Broken Heart” (originally sang from the daughter’s point of view by Maddie and Tae). She has a soft loving voice, being there for her daughter when she needs her mama most – during a time of heartbreak. You can sense compassion and relatability as the mother knows what it’s like to have been heartbroken too. I want to be the mother my child can always come to in a time of heart break, just as this song perfectly describes through its raw vulnerable lyrics.
“Hey Baby girl Ive got the perfect thing
To help you get out that wine
And that black mascara off your pillow case
Take some aspirin for that headache
Baby our door is always open
Stay as long as you want and don’t stress
And hey, did that trick work to get that wine
Outta of your favorite dressHate to tell you he’s sleeping just fine
Cant believe the nerve of this guy
To leave you so easy
But you’re gonna be alright
Life’s about learning not to fall so hard
Baby you wont die from this broken heart,” – Britnee Kellogg
“Hey Mama”
This song relates to all the long sleepless nights, the tired tears in my eyes and taking it one day at a time. While I say I can’t wait for my baby to hold his bottle himself and sleep through the night, this song reminds me it won’t last forever, to do the best I can, and know I am strong for him. I love the reassurance and uplifting message Britnee gives to mamas in this song. The music video is beautiful as it shows mamas taking care of there babies, both loving it and shedding tears at the same time. I want to take these newborn moments in, love on my baby as much as I can, and know I am strong and the girl I’ve always been, but now a little boy will soon be calling me mama.
“Do what you gotta do to
Take a breath and find a win
Give yourself some grace
You’re still the queen you’ve always been
Hey, Mama, you got this
I promise you got thisPull yourself together
It won’t be this hard forever
You’ve got the strength of a hurricane
You’rе a fighter in every way
Hеy, Mama, you got this
I promise you got this,” – Britney Kellogg
“This Mess”
I’ve been constantly cleaning the house when the baby is taking naps and can now relate to this beautiful song so much. I know as he gets older it will be harder to keep up with the messes, but Britnee sings of embracing the messes because they are all part of making memories. This song reminds us to be grateful for the messes our kids make because they are all part of raising them and being thankful they are in your life to make the messes. I can’t wait to clean up his messes because I know they wont be made forever.
“It’s unruly but it’s beautiful
It’s spilled milk on the kitchen floor
It’s laundry on the bed for two days
Ain’t been folded yet
Yeah, it’s tangled and complicated
Sticky finger refrigerator
Paintings of a family
Ain’t quite what we thought it’d beBut who’d have thought it’d be so sweet?
Nowhere else I’d rather be
Kissing in the kitchen with your arms ’round me
In this mess, this mess
Hail Mary right from the start
Found our way feeling through the dark
Baby, it’s a miracle we got this far
But this mess, this mess is ours,” – Britnee Kellogg
