Laci Kaye Booth – “Cigarettes” & “I Let Him Love Me”
Laci’s new album, The Loneliest Girl In The World, is truly mesmerizing in every good way. The music videos for “Cigarettes” and “I Let Him Love Me” together tell a story. “Cigarettes” begins by showing Laci looking back at videos of herself as a young beauty queen. She sings of being 17 and falling in love with a bad boy, only to find it fall apart. She then sings of when she was 23 pursuing her music dreams. She remembers playing in smoky bars and it not working out how she hoped. She learned her first didn’t last, to live with her regrets, and to hate cigarettes for the memories they bring.
“I learned sometimes your first don’t last,
– Laci Kaye Booth
I learned to scream, I learned to laugh,
I learned to live with my regrets,
I learned I hate, I hate cigarettes.”
At the end of the video, Laci enters a home that starts the video for “I Let Him Love Me”. This video is full of passion as Laci remembers the longing for someone who didn’t love her back. She eventually finds someone else who wants to love her, so she lets him. However, this doesn’t take away the sting of rejection and painful memory, leading her to burn the house by lighting an old cigarette stub and throwing it down. Laci’s voice coupled with the storytelling in each song, is a work of art. I will listen to this sad, yet wildly romantic album all summer.
“You said that you shouldn’t, so I took a drive,
– Laci Kaye Booth
You said that you wouldn’t ever change your mind,
But I met a man, one who was ready,
When you said that you couldn’t, baby
I let him love me.”
Zandi Holup – “Gas Station Flowers”
In her song, “Gas Station Flowers”, Zandi sings of taking her partner as he is. Despite all his faults, when he brings home a bouquet of gas station flowers, they are enough for her to look past his addictions because the cheap flowers are better than being alone. While he has his demons of drugs and alcohol, she wonders if she is any better off as she sleeps next to hers. Keeping him around may be bad for her, but she will take him back as long as he comes home because she’d rather go through hell than let him go. Zandi sings this story of torment and love in a raw vulnerable voice. The lyrics will give you chills as she sings, making this a song I will listen to again and again this summer. I can’t wait for more music from Zandi and will be sure to feature her future song releases.
“Bet you saw them in the checkout line,
– Zandi Holup
Carnations three-ninety-nine,
A cellophane-wrapped afterthought,
But hey, that’s fine, at least they’re mine.
I’ll take you drunk, I’ll take you stoned,
I’ll take you back, long as you come home,
I’d rather go through Hell than let you go,
‘Cause those gas station flowers are better than being alone.”
Georgia Webster – “Attention”
She bought a new expensive dress, kissed his friend in a bar, and dyed her hair – yet he doesn’t even look up. What does Georgia have to do to get his attention? In her delicate voice, Georgia sings about wondering if he is strategically cruel or just dumb. He should be missing her, but doesn’t care. She then sings of all the hypothetical crazy things she would have to do to get his attention – like crashing her car, breaking her arm, being bit by a shark, and burning her house down. I love this take on the overwhelming sadness one can feel when trying to get someone’s attention romantically, that your mind wonders about the crazy lengths you would go to for one glimpse. The video gives nostalgic vibes with a fresh sound I can’t stop craving. The emo vibes are thriving in this delicately romantic song for summer and I am here for it. This song will be the opening track for Georgia’s upcoming album, SIGNS, on May 31.
“If I crashed my car,
– Georgia Webster
If I broke my arm,
Got bit by a shark,
Would you care then? Would you care then?
If my heart gave out,
If my house burned down,
Baby, do I have to fly halfway to Heaven
Just to get your attention?“
I will continue to feature new music I love all summer long. To stay in the know, follow me @farmgirlwithcurls and subscribe.
