Chasing Truth: Not Living To Be Liked

I remember back to my school days where I always wanted to be liked. I didn’t always realize how much I cared about what people thought. It can be easy to get caught up in this world and believe having friends, romance and attention online is important.

Throwback to 2005 when I was a cheerleader and loved being liked

My parents taught me to love Jesus and be a girl of His word, yet so many times I acted like a girl of this world. As I’ve gotten older it’s been easier to stand firm in my faith, however I still have to stop myself from getting caught up in showing my life on social media to feel good. When I came across GirlDefined Ministries on YouTube, it brought me relief to overcome the trap of living to be liked. These versus tell us why we should live for Christ alone:

Galatians 1:10 (ESV) “For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.”

Psalm 86:11 (ESV) “Teach me your way, O Lord, that I may walk in your truth; unite my heart to fear your name.”

IMG_0445This truth changed my perspective on what I am living for each day. “We need to live for the applause of our King alone,” says Bethany Beal of GirlDefined Ministries. I attended the GirlDefined conference in San Antonio, Texas where more than 600 Christian girls of all ages came together to learn how to fearlessly pursue God’s word for their lives. I do wish I would have had this conference to attend at 15 years old, yet at 30 years old I feel a calling to apply God’s truth to my life not only for myself, but to be a role model just as Kristen and Bethany are with their ministries.

IMG_0448In the first session we learned how we can slowly fade to becoming a girl of the world:

First, you drift away from genuinely loving God. Matthew 12:30

Second, you no longer view the Bible as your authority. 2 Timothy 4: 3-4

Third, you embrace the beliefs and ideas of the world. Ephesians 4:11-14

God wants to help each one of us become girls who are anchored in His word!

Watch a live stream of session one here to learn about how you can chase truth:

We ultimately learned five ways we can bravely chase truth today:

IMG_0466First, make your faith your own. John 3:16

Second, pursue a personal relationship with Jesus.

Third, get involved in a gospel centered church.

Fourth, Dig into biblical resources.

Fifth, find a Godly mentor. Proverbs 19:20

Let’s bravely chase truth together!

Matthew 6:19-21 (ESV) “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

IMG_0480GirlDefined Ministries is truly inspiring girls of all ages to pursue God’s word in how they live their lives. I thank God I came across their videos on YouTube because it is so easy to get caught up in living to be liked and the cares of this world. I am not perfect and have to make a plan each day on how to cast down negative thoughts and distractions from the world that keep me from God’s word. It is my prayer we can strive each day to fearlessly pursue what the Bible has to say so we can be ambassadors for Christ and create a sisterhood because we are sisters in Christ!
