Life Lessons From Leonardo DiCaprio

By Lauren Schwab

I have come to learn and know life is but a vapor. It can be hard to remember this when we go on living day after day, until something unexpected happens to us or someone we know to remind of this. Whether it be near death experiences, missed opportunities, birthdays that make us reflect upon our lives, or life changing miracles that remind of us of the divine power that is God, someone greater than ourselves and ultimately in control of our lives and destiny.

The Bible tells us in context in John 13Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, and spend a year there and engage in business and make a profit.” 14Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away. 15Instead, you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and also do this or that.”

I firmly believe we all have a purpose in this world and our lives should be driven by it as if they depend upon it, because they do. You Tube sensation Trisha Paytas released her single and music video “Leonardo DiCaprio” singing of her childhood crush on the movie star. While the video fantasizes and reminisces of being in love and watching his films, it also serves as a reminder of how stories and people can play a significant role in how we view the world and pursue our own dreams. It can be easy to idolize Hollywood stars, this idea of fame and fortune, and place our value in finding romance and true love. While these captivate our mind and drive us, we should be driven by our own life pursuit and strive to impact the lives of others just as much as we allow others to impact our lives.

I decided to look up interviews with Leonardo, to learn his take on the value of life, pursuing his purpose and living with passion. God gave him the purpose of acting to entertain, enlighten and inspire people to make life count by not wasting a moment. True living is experiencing, pursuing, giving and loving. In this interview Leo makes light of a near death experience:

It is true, life is but a vapor. I believe when it is our time, it is our time. God still had more work for Leo to do here. I do not know if Leo is a believer, but he is an example of pursuing ones dreams and always looking for ways to grow and use his acting talents for the right reasons. Here is a flashback interview from when he filmed Titanic and everyone expected the film to be his big break into stardom:

While Leo’s life pursuit is different from my own and many of us, we can take away his humbleness and always strive to grow in order to give back to others through our talents. Our talents may not be as raved about in the public eye as acting, but we all have God given talents. Mine is caring for animals, writing, and telling the stories of people pursuing their purpose. I hope this both inspires you and allows you to pursue life as though it is a vapor.
