Four Break-up Songs (With A Classic) for a Solo Valentine’s Day – Tearjerker Warning

By Lauren Schwab Eyre

While Valentine’s Day can bring all the love feels, it can equally remind you of love lost. Sometimes you just need to press play to a song that gets you during your solo date night with pinot and chocolates. Cheers to Emma Roberts for embracing this in one of my favorite rom coms….

Here are four songs that get your heartbreak, each of these female artists understand how it is to lose love and let it go because they are better off without a man who doesn’t treat her right, stick it out, tell you he loves you or simply grow up.

“What He Didn’t Do” – Carly Pearce

All the wrong things someone does to you can be just as bad as all the right things they didn’t do. Carly will have you hanging on every word in this song about all the things he didn’t do to keep her love as she holds on to the hope that someday she will find a man who will.

I ain’t gonna go and tell you what he did
But I’ll tell you what he didn’t do
Treat me right, put me first, be a man of his word
Stay home ’cause he wanted to
Always fight for my love, hold on tight like it’s something
That he couldn’t stand to lose
The devil’s in the details, I won’t tell

The hell that he put me through
All I know is in the end, it wasn’t what he did
No, it was what he didn’t do

– Carly Pearce

“You Ain’t No Cowboy” – Jenna Paulette

When he seems like the real deal – the way he looks, the way he dresses, and even the way he works hard. Yet, you get fooled because if he were a real cowboy he would stick around for the long haul. Jenna vulnerably sings of how he stole her heart, only ride off and leave her for his own ambitions.

You got the hat, you got the cattle
You put a million miles on that saddle
You sure know how to make a cowgirl fall
You got the boots, scars on your knuckle
But settling down don’t win any buckles
You ain’t no good sticking it out for the long haul
Turns out you ain’t no cowboy at all

– Jenna Paulette

“If He Wanted To He Would” – Kylie Morgan

You fall hard in love, then he leaves you wondering if he feels the same. You give him grace by thinking he must have a good reason for not getting back to you. Kylie sings the hard truth to her younger self in this song because the reality is – if he really loved her then he would tell her, if he really missed her then he would call, if he really wanted to be with her then he would.

If he loved you, he would tell you
If he missed you, he would call
If he wants you to meet his momma
Then he would bring you home
Oh, there ain’t no excuse
He ain’t Mr. Misunderstood
Quit lying to yourself
If he wanted to, he would

– Kylie Morgan

“Dammit” – Alexandra Kay (Blink-182 cover)

Its 1997 and you go to the movies with your friends. You awkwardly see them with someone else and know it will never be the same again – this is growing up. Alexandra takes us back in this classic Blink-182 song. Her voice and the melody completely change the mood, you can feel how sad these lyrics actually are when they aren’t to an upbeat punk rock tempo. This is the cover I never knew I needed and will have it on repeat as I finish off the bottle of pinot and take a bite of my last chocolate this Valentine’s Day.

And it’s happened once again
I’ll turn to a friend
Someone that understands
And sees through the master plan
But everybody’s gone
And I’ve been here for too long
To face this on my own
Well, I guess this is growing up

– Alexandra Kay (Blink-182)

While being heartbroken isn’t fun, leaning into those feelings with a good song that gets you can give you the time to reflect. It can make you appreciate love even more when you do find it again. No matter your relationship status this Valentine’s Day, find a song you can sing along to and embrace all the feels.
